Despite being exclusive to the United States and iOS prior to today’s expansion to 11 additional global markets, OpenAI’s ChatGPT app has had a stellar start. According to a new analysis by app intelligence provider data.ai, the app has already surpassed 500,000 downloads within its first six days of availability. This makes it one of the most successful new app releases of both this year and last, surpassed only by the launch of the Trump-backed Twitter clone Truth Social in February 2022.

As consumer demand for AI chatbots increased, the App Store was flooded with third-party applications titled “ChatGPT” or “AI chatbot.” Despite the fact that many of these apps were essentially fleeceware, attempting to deceive consumers into purchasing costly subscriptions to access their AI, the top apps still managed to generate millions in consumer spending. This competitive landscape among AI chatbot apps could have made it more difficult for the official ChatGPT app to acquire traction in the market. As it turns out, however, this was not the case.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT app outperformed the majority of its competitors, including other prominent AI and chatbot apps and Microsoft’s Bing and Edge apps, which offered some of the first significant third-party integrations of OpenAI’s GPT-4 technology.

Though Bing and Microsoft Edge saw 340K and 335K downloads across iOS and Android during their best five-day periods in February, OpenAI’s ChatGPT app easily surpassed them with 480,000 installs in the first five days of its iOS-only U.S. launch.

Compared to Bing and Edge’s iOS downloads, ChatGPT was even more dominant, with 480K installations versus 250K for Bing and 195K for Edge.

However, Bing and Edge were still ahead of ChatGPT when comparing all U.S. downloads in May across both app stores, but not when comparing only iOS installations. This suggests that ChatGPT may shortly surpass these search-focused alternatives.

According to Data.ai’s analysis, the app outperformed other top AI chatbot apps in the U.S., many of which were generically named to capitalize on consumer queries for keywords such as “AI” and “chatbot” on the App Store. Here, OpenAI’s ChatGPT ranked in the top five by downloads, compared to the greatest five-day periods for other applications on the App Store and Google Play in 2023.

The only app to surpass it was “Chat with Ask AI,” which had 590,000 installs between April 4 and 8, 2023, compared to ChatGPT’s 480,000 installations between May 18 and 22, 2023, according to the data.

In May 2023, despite only being available for a week, ChatGPT is already among the top five AI chatbot applications by downloads in the United States. At the time of data.ai’s number calculation, ChatGPT and other top chatbot applications were compared for the month of May through the 23rd, which is technically less than a week after ChatGPT’s release.

At that point, the app had received 550,000 downloads, tying it with Genie – AI Chatbot, the AI chatbot app with the next-highest May downloads ranking on the U.S. App Store. ChatOn — AI Chat Bot Assistant (610K installs), AI Chatbot – Nova (680K installs), and Chat with Ask AI (1.4M installs) were ahead of the pack. Nevertheless, given how rapidly ChatGPT surpassed 500,000 installations, it may soon surpass these competitors.

In addition, data.ai discovered that ChatGPT had one of the finest new app launches this year and in 2022.

In its first five days of iOS installations in the United States, ChatGPT generated 480,000 installs, making it the second-largest app launch behind Truth Social, which saw 630,000 downloads. The next highest debuts (i.e., the first five days after launch) included the arrival of Widgetable: Lock Screen Widget in March 2023 (360,000 installs) and the 2022 launches of MyNBA2K23 (310,000 installs) and sendtit – Q&A on Instagram (260,000 installs).

This also placed ChatGPT in the >99.99th percentile for new iOS app releases in the United States since 2022.

Only the top 1% of applications generated more than 10,600 U.S. downloads in their first five days, according to Data.ai, and the top 0.1% had more than 45,000. Its analysis included data for approximately 39,000 iOS applications that debuted in the United States on iOS since the beginning of 2022 and then ranked in the top listings at some point during this time frame. (The data excludes Apple’s native applications, such as Apple Music Classical).

Obviously, installations are only one method for gauging consumer demand, and they are not as reliable as analyzing the number of people who subsequently joined up and became active app users.

However, because ChatGPT is so new, data.ai does not yet have accurate estimates for metrics such as the number of daily or monthly active users; this may take a few weeks.
