While Twitter’s future remains uncertain, Meta has entered the race to develop the next significant microblogging platform. According to an email sent to a limited group of creators and witnessed by TechCrunch, the launch of this new Meta app is scheduled for the summer.

This standalone text-based application will be partially integrated with Instagram. Users will retain their Instagram verification and handle, and their Instagram followers will be notified to follow them on the unnamed platform. The text-based platform of Meta will be decentralized and compatible with ActivityPub-based Mastodon.

Meta seeks to recruit prominent public figures, such as sportsmen, actors, producers, showrunners, and comedians, for early access. Meta acknowledged in its note to these developers that Mastodon, Bluesky, and other applications had a head start in the contest to build the next Twitter. However, the company noted that it has access to billions of consumers through its app family, which includes Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, and Messenger.

This new decentralized application has the pseudonym P92 or Barcelona, as reported first by MoneyControl. Meta has remained silent about these developments, but in a statement to Money Control, the company said, “We are investigating a decentralized social network for sharing text updates. We believe there is a need for a space where creators and public figures can post timely updates about their interests.”

According to Lia Haberman, author of the social media newsletter ICYMI, the app will adhere to the same community standards as Instagram. Similarly, users will be able to log in with their Instagram credentials, blocks and concealed terms from Instagram will transfer over, and some security features, such as two-factor authentication and abuse reporting, will be incorporated from the beginning. According to Haberman’s sources, text posts will be limited to 500 characters, and users will be able to upload photographs, links, and videos up to five minutes in length. There will be a feed where you can like, remark, and repost content, similar to Twitter and other competitor applications.

Matt Navarra, a social media consultant, received the same information that he had tweeted earlier this month.

The market is primed for new Twitter alternatives; however, after migrating to numerous platforms, some users may be apprehensive about creating yet another account. As with any company, not all of Meta’s novel products and experiences are successful. It has discontinued products such as the anonymous adolescent app tbh, the Cameo-like app Super, and the Nextdoor clone in recent years. Neighborhoods and the couple’s application Student-focused social network with a concentration on customization Campus, video dating service Initiated and more.
